Several years ago I was the recipient of a grant that allowed me to purchase a large format pinhole camera and film. I have made pinhole cameras from the size of a 35mm film canister to a 16″X20″ form core structure (unwieldy, at best). The shortcoming with all of the cameras I have made stems from the fact that they are single shot cameras – shoot once, take to the darkroom to reload. The commercial cameras allow for film holders to be used so that multiple images can be made in the field.
My primary interest in this project was to shoot portraits of people I knew, and I chose to print then using the Van Dyke process. The idea for this came from an article I wrote years ago called Stone Knives And Bear Skins, so although I do enjoy digital photography, my real joy comes from moving in the opposite direction.
