If one goes to the Aran Islands, three large rocks off the coast of Galway, Ireland, they are missing something if they do not read “The Aran Islands” by John Millington Synge. Unfortunately, this book is no longer in print and difficult to find. However, the influence of this place on him, having taken Yates‘ advice to live on the islands for a while, helped him become a very well known playwright.

This image is of the cottage in which he lived. The thatched roof certainly needed repair when I was there, and ubiquitous stone fences define this small spot where he spent many summers.
