On Saturday WVU played Pitt. All the #2 team in the nation needed to do was to knock off a 4-7 team at home to be able to play for the national championship. This is something that just about everyone figured was a done deal – WVU was favored by four touchdowns – but I had a feeling that it would not come to pass.
I have watched too many WVU – Pitt games where one team was considerably better than the other, and the game has been a toss-up until the end. There is a reason they call it the Backyard Brawl. This particular time around, Pitt ended WVU’s chances to play for the national championship, an opportunity they have had only once before (WVU has won more games than any other team that has never won a national title).
This shot, of course, is not from that game, but from a Navy game. This was taken sometime between the 2000 and 2002 season, when Navy had a combined record of 3 wins and 30 losses.
